Birchalls Bookstore in Brisbane Street, Launceston is an icon in the book trade and in Tasmania. In terms of the trade it is 'Australia's oldest bookstore'; it has played an influential role in the development of bookselling in Tasmania and Asutralia; and it has also had an innovative influence on the International Booksellers Association. In terms of the community it has been a fundamental presence in Tasmanian life. 'Meet you in Birchalls!' has been a familiar arrangement for generations of Launcestonians, while its educational services have been an integral part of going to school in Tasmania since the 1900s. This dual focus on being part of the trade and part of the community has been a foundation of Birchalls' longevity and its success.
