Dr James Harold Patterson (1873-1914), son of W.and Sarah Patterson of Mayfield, Launceston, qualified as a surgeon in Edinburgh U.K. He served as Surgeon-Lieutenant (later Captain) with the 5th Victorian Rifles in the Boer War in South Africa in 1901-2 and was awarded the Queen's medal for bravery. While on active service he wrote regular letters to his mother and also kept a diary type letter for her describing his experiences. Later he settled as a general medical practitioner at Tallangatta, Victoria, and also acted as Surgeon to the Light Horse. He married Emily Grace Haines and had three children but died in 1914, aged 49.
