Abstract

The monthly evening meeting of the Society, was held on Tuesday, the 12th instant, A. Kennerley, Esq., in the chair.
Mr. Wintle read some remarks on the "Evidences of the Shell Deposits
seen around Hobart Town, not being produced by the Aborigines, and the
period of their origin being Post Tertiary."
Professor Neumayer from Melbourne, addressed the meeting in regards to the modern instruments for the
observations on Terrestrial Magnetism described to them, in order that they
might be able to compare them with those formerly in use at the Magnetic
Observatory, kept up for so many years in this locality.

In 1843 the Horticultural and Botanical Society of Van Diemen's Land was founded and became the Royal Society of Van Diemen's Land for Horticulture, Botany, and the Advancement of Science in 1844. In 1855 its name changed to Royal Society of Tasmania for Horticulture, Botany, and the Advancement of Science. In 1911 the name was shortened to Royal Society of Tasmania.
