This thesis presents the results of some investigations into problems associated with the determination of the relationship between the sea level directional muon flux, as observed by muon detectors, and the primary cosmic ray flux. Previous estimates of muon coupling coefficients (which express the primary-secondary intensity relationship) have been in poor agreement, and insufficient to define the zenith angle dependence of the coefficients. A new determination was therefore undertaken.
