I would particularly like to thank my supervisor, Professor Barry Rose, and Professor Michael Roe of the Department of History, University of Tasmania, for their generous and patient support during the time this thesis took to write. Dr Fred Levine, School of Art, University of Tasmania, read the thesis in its first draft and also offered me a number of valuable suggestions regarding the re-organisation of its structure for which I have been most grateful. The bulk of the research, particularly for Chapters 1, 4, 5 and 6, was carried out during a three-month visit to Paris in 1988, for which I would like to thank Mr Geoff Parr, Director, Tasmanian School of Art. I received a great deal of assistance from the staff of the Departement des Estampes at the Bibliotheque Nationale during the stay in Paris. Back in Hobart, the Centre for the Arts Library staff, particularly Mrs Meg Taylor and Ms Gill Ward, have been extremely generous with their time and on numerous occasions provided bibliographical assistance. Finally, Suzette Holmes not only read the text critically but helped to solve several difficult translation problems. I must claim authorship of the translated quotes with all of their faults, however she offered many suggestions for which I am very grateful.
