'Albert Lortzing - Der Wildschiitz, (The Creative Process)', is a critical analysis of both the libretto and score of Lortzing's comic opera, Der Wildschiitz. The dissertation falls into two sections: Part 1 is a consideration of the original source and the development of the libretto; Part 2, a consideration of the musical setting of this libretto. Lortzing's criteria for selection of material are identified, then the background to and content of the original play considered in detail before proceeding to a comparison between the play and the libretto. Biographical information and commentary is introduced which lays particular emphasis on Lortzing's background as author in order to comment on those factors which may have influenced his choice of subject matter and to suggest possible reasons for identified similarities and differences between the play and the libretto. The consideration of the musical setting of the libretto is introduced by Lortzing's background as a musician and an assessment of the forces available to him when he prepared the score before proceeding to an analysis of the complete score. Although reference is made to the possible influence of other composers on Lortzing's style, there is no direct attempt to evaluate Lortzing's music by comparison with works of his contemporaries. The prime objective of the dissertation, to identify the process by which Lortzing transformed Kotzebue's comedy, Der Rehbock, into the comic opera, Der Wildschiitz, gives a clear insight into Lortzing's capabilities as librettist and composer and some insights into the state of opera production in Germany from c.1825 - 1843.
