Abstract

Macroinvertebrates were again sampled, in autumn (April) 2006, at three sites in the King River between the John Butters power station and the Queen River junction. Six reference sites were also sampled in the Franklin, Denison, Maxwell and Jane Rivers at the same time, as part of the Gordon Basslink Monitoring Program, acting also as reference sites for the King River. Sampling was conducted as required under the Basslink Monitoring Program, with all sites sampled using:  Quantitative surber samplers with 10 sample units taken per site placed randomly in mid-riffle habitats;  Rapid bioassessment (RBA) kick sampling, with live-picking on-site. The former samples are used to generate data on abundances of individual taxa, total abundances and diversity (as number of taxa). The latter samples are used to derived O/E values for each site, using the RIVPACS models developed by Davies et al. (1999) for Tasmanian Hydro catchments. Data collected in this survey will from part of the database used to assess changes in instream conditions associated with changes in flow regimes resulting from Basslink. No changes in macroinvertebrate abundance, community composition or representation of expected taxa could be associated with changes to power station operations during this first year of the post-Basslink period that preceded either the spring 2005 or autumn 2006 sampling events.
