Abstract

In 1856 Alexander George Webster (1830-1914), who had arrived in Tasmania with his parents in 1839,
took over the general merchant business of C.T. Smith and ran it for a few years in partnership with Mr.
Tabart until he acquired the sole interest. Later he took his sons Charles Ernest and Edwin Herbert into
partnership as A. G. Webster & Sons. The business grew and in addition to general merchandise and trade
in wool, grain and other produce the firm imported agricultural machinery and implements, windmills,
pumps, boilers etc. and acted as agents for the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company and the
Sun Insurance Office of London. There were branches in Launceston and Devonport and agents in most
towns.
These records consist mainly of account ledgers and advertisements. The Royal Society of
Tasmania holds some of A.G. Webster's business correspondence for 1877 (RS.113).
Also includes a photograph album presented to A.G. Webster by his staff to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of being in business. - Transfered to the Tasmanian Archives and Heritage Office (TAHO) - Jan 2013 -www.linc.tas.gov.au/tasmaniasheritage
