Between 1832 and 1837 James Backhouse and George Walker, Quaker ‚Äötravellers under concern, visited Launceston six times and spent a great deal of time in northern Tasmania. This paper examines their religious activities, inlcuding their support of a small community of Friends, and in observing and reporting on social and moral condition of the colony, especially in relation to the convicts and the Aborigines. Their journals and correspondence provide valuable insights into life in Launceston during a period of rapid change.
