Abstract

This essay compares the author's experience as a field systems engineer in the 1960s with subsequent developments, and focuses on the role of computing professionals in respect of their clients, that is, in respect of users at all levels. The current popularity and role of outsourcing is compared to the popularity and role of the service bureau in and around the 1960s.
