Abstract
Sir Richard Owen (1804-1892) was a famous English naturalist
and surgeon. He was conservator at the Hunterian Museum
of the Royal College of Surgeons, London (1827),
Hunterian Professor of comparative anatomy and
physiology at the Royal College of Surgeons (1836-1856),
and superintendent of Natural History at the British
Museum. He was also a member of a commission for
inquiring into the health of the Metropolis (1847) and
of one on Smithfield and other meat markets. He
became F.R.S. 1834 and was awarded the K.C.B. in 1884,
amongst many other honours.
