Abstract
James Barnard (0809 - 1897) was the son of John George Barnard
of Blackfriars, London, a printer and, a freeman of the City of
London Company of Stationers. James was apprenticed to his
father to learn the printing trade in 1825. In 1838 he was
appointed Government Printer ,VDL. and arrived in Hobart with
his wife and daughter on the Pyramus in March 18.39. He lived
and worked in Maccquarie Street (Surrey House). as well as a
daughter, Emily, he had three sons, James, Henry Sultzer
and Charles E. born in Tasmania.
