Abstract
Lease granted by Edward Lord (1781–1859), Commanding Officer of H.M. settlement
Hobart Town V.D.L.(1810-1812), 1st Lieut. Royal Marine Forces, to John Taylor
(1), John Taylor (2), both privates in Royal Marines, of an
allotment containing 18 perches, bounded by gardens occupied by Ann
Donohough and Peter Douglas, for 14 years at an annual rent of l0s 6d. Lease dated 24 May 1810.
Lord was said at one time to be the richest man in Van Diemen's Land, the owner of three ships, warehouses in Hobart and Port Dalrymple, 6000 cattle, 7000 sheep and 35,000 acres (14,164 ha). When the Van Diemen's Land Agricultural Society was founded on 1 January 1822 Lord became its first president and he was also an original proprietor of the Bank of Van Diemen's Land.
