Abstract
Miscellaneous documents relating to smallpox vaccinations in Tasmania in 1853, 1864 and 1869. These documents include a letter to the Legislative Council from Dr ESP Bedford, August 1853, detailing Bedford's plans to vaccinate 'all in the Island' against smallpox. A letter from the Legislative Council to Dr GF Story concerning these plans is also included, which is followed by Story's reply, in which he stressed the need to reassure the public about the efficiency of vaccination (1853). Also included are a set of (undated) instructions for public vaccination, a 'circular' from the Colonial Secretary's Office requesting reports on vaccinations for 1863-4, a copy of those reports, and a circular about smallpox in Victoria (1869). These records also include a petition from Dr ES Hall to the Tasmanian Legislative Council (1869), in which Hall described the failure of voluntary vaccination, and argued for an amended Compulsory Vaccination Act.
