Abstract

Monitoring of benthic macroinvertebrates is a requirement under the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Salmon Standard (2012) for salmonid hatchery facilities discharging to freshwater receiving environments (rivers). ASC accreditation requirements for the monitoring are described in Appendix VIII-3 of the standard (see Appendix 1).
The Standard’s requirements are not highly specified and are not fully contemporary in practice or design with current European, Australian or US bioassessment methods. However, they are broadly consistent with the macroinvertebrate component of the Tasmanian River Condition Index (TRCI) protocols (NRM South 2009, 2009a), now the accepted standard for river bioassessment in Tasmania (and in turn adopted with Tasmanian EPA monitoring and assessment requirements and fully compliant with the ‘FARWH’ national river assessment standards).
The macroinvertebrate component of the TRCI aquatic life assessment protocol has therefore been adopted for the Tassal ASC accreditation assessments, with minor changes to the instream sampling design to be consistent with the ASC requirements. It was successfully used for ASC accreditation assessment of the Russell Falls hatchery facility on the Tyenna River in November 2013 (Davies and Cook 2013).
Annual ASC Standard compliant macroinvertebrate monitoring is required for the Saltas Florentine hatchery which discharges to the Florentine River just upstream of the Hydro Tasmania Lake Catagunya reservoir. Sampling is required at one site upstream and one site downstream of the hatchery effluent discharge point. This report is a description of the first round of sampling and analysis compliant with the ASC Standard that was undertaken in summer (late February) 2014.
For compliance with the ASC standard, equality in a status rating for benthic macroinvertebrate community condition is required between the upstream and downstream sites. It should be noted that the Standard requires follow-up surveys during the same year if the results deviate from the Standard’s requirement of equality in macroinvertebrate condition status rating between the upstream and downstream sites.
The TRCI Aquatic Life Macroinvertebrate Indicator (MI) provides an integrated score for the condition of macroinvertebrate communities that has been adopted for this assessment. The score takes into account three key aspects of macroinvertebrate community condition as follows:
• Expectedness - the proportion of taxa expected to occur at the site under unimpaired conditions that are actually observed at the site, combined with the ratio of observed to expected scores for pollution sensitivity of the sampled community – the ‘SIGNAL’ score;
• Abundance - the density of individuals per unit area of river bed); and
• Composition - the proportion of environmentally sensitive taxa from the ‘EPT’ taxonomic grouping in the sample)
In each case, indicator values are compared to ‘reference’ or expected values using a combination of predictive models or known value ranges derived from unimpaired reference sites in Tasmania (NRM South 2009a)
