Abstract

Copies of photographs of Mark Stump rehearsing 'Jane' with the
University Dramatic Society in 1921, and copies of newspaper reports and
cast list, donated (May 1985) by his daughter Judith Stump.
Mark Stump was a student at the University of Tasmania 1920-1924.
He married a fellow student, Elizabeth Hales. His daughter states
that proceeds of the play went towards the cost of two lawn tennis
courts, as noted in the Chancellor's graduation address of 1923.
Terence Crisp, who also appears in the photographs, was the driving
force behind the Dramatic Club. He was a cousin of the actor, Charles
Laughton, but unfortunately his opportunities for stage work were
very limited by his tiny stature - he was about 5 ft. tall.
Terence moved to Melbourne in 1925 and found some outlets for his
talent in broadcasting and directing amateur theatrical groups.
Includes copies of photographs of rehearsals on the lawn outside the University
on the Domain (Terence Crisp, Mark Stump, Lance Geeves,
Beryl Miller, Jack Parish), photocopy of title page and fly leaf of Mark Stump's copy of
"Jane, A Farce in three acts", and photocopies of newspaper reviews.

From University Collection UT424. See also University Dramatic Club Glebe Theatre Players Index UT556 http://eprints.utas.edu.au/18491/ which includes programmmes and news cuttings 1947–1950.
