Abstract
An aquatic biota survey has been conducted in Limestone Creek and the Wilson River in relation to the proposed Venture Mineral tailings dam development at Limestone Creek (Wilson River catchment) western Tasmania. The survey collected quantitative and qualitative data on the fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, and aquatic plants of Limestone Creek, the site of the proposed tailings dam, and in the Wilson River, both upstream and downstream of its junction with Limestone Creek.
These data were used to assess the presence of species listed under current legislation, the ecological and conservation status of the aquatic communities, and to form the basis for ongoing monitoring.
Data on community composition and species presence was collected and assessed in a manner consistent with the standard DPIPWE-NRM TRCI (Tasmanian River Condition Index) framework for river condition assessment (NRM South 2009), which includes AUSRIVAS assessment (Davies 2000, Simpson and Norris 2000). Species lists were also compared against current state and national lists of threatened and endangered species under the Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act 1995 (TSP) and the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC).
The resulting data are provided in a form suitable for comparison with any future data collected in a similar manner, to allow analysis of changes over time (as may be required under any future standard operating license conditions)
