Abstract

Proceedings of the Monthly Meeting of the Royal Society of Tasmania held on the 11th January, 1854, Joseph Hone, Esq., senior member
of the Council, occupied the chair.
The following gentlemen were balloted for and elected Fellows of the Society

Lieutenant- Colonel Kenny, Thomas Macdowell, and J. E. Bateman, Esquires,
of Hobart Town ; other candidates for membership were proposed.
The Secretary laid on the table a complete series of forty-four charts of winds
and currents in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, with "Pilot " and "Whale Charts"
of Lieutenant Maury, of the United States Navy, forwarded by the author through
S.P. Griffin, Esq., U.S.N., to His Excellency the President, for the Royal Society's
Library.

In 1843 the Horticultural and Botanical Society of Van Diemen's Land was founded and became the Royal Society of Van Diemen's Land for Horticulture, Botany, and the Advancement of Science in 1844. In 1855 its name changed to Royal Society of Tasmania for Horticulture, Botany, and the Advancement of Science. In 1911 the name was shortened to The Royal Society of Tasmania.
