Abstract

The primary objective in the presentation of this
thesis is to express the understanding I have obtained of the
response of reinforced concrete structures to vibrational
forces.
To many, the topic "vibration analysis" immediately
brings forth ideas of complex mathematical descriptions. In
practice, even the most elementary vibration calculations are
often not conducted because of the fear of the mathematics
involved.
I have put much effort to separate the mathematics
from the physical description of vibrations in general, and
in particular the vibrational response of reinforced concrete
members and structures.
The work reported in this dissertation bridges two
very important areas of structural engineering, namely
reinforced concrete design and dynamic response. Both areas
attract much individual attention, but very little research
appears to have been done to relate the two. The aims of this
work then are to bring these two areas closer together, to
obtain a basic understanding of the behaviour of concrete
structures under vibration, and to present the work in a
fashion that is of benefit to a working engineer.
