The first part of this thesis is based on observations made in the forest and a discussion of the place of fire in the ecology. It is concluded that there has been ecological equilibrium for several thousand years except in areas where man's pattern of behaviour has recently changed. It is argued that this equilibrium is dynamic and that it takes the form of \fire-cycles\". The second part deals with some experiments carried out during the period 1957-61. The third part discusses regeneration surveys in Tasmania and other parts of the world and then proposes a new factor of heterogeneity \"h\" which appears to have several advantages over existing factors."
