The following thesis is a report of a project carried out during 1976 in fulfilling the requirements of the M.Sc. degree at the University of Tasmania. The aim was to design and construct a Fabry-Perot interferometer compatible with the 1 m. reflecting telescope at the Canopus Hill Observatory. Chapter 1 introduces the relevant theory and reviews the development of FP spectrometers in astronomy. Chapter 2 is an outline of the design problems and the solutions reached in the final instrument. The calibration and testing of the various components is also included. Although the complete instrument as designed could not be fully operated (owing to the failure of the FP control system) the individual components were. A report of the testing procedures and results achieved is found in Chapter 3.
