Abstract

The University Council is the governing body of the University of Tasmania which was established on 1st January 1890 by an Act of the Colony of Tasmania. Council makes decisions in relation to policy and planning, makes University legislation and approves policy documents. It is advised by its committees, its working parties, and (in relation to academic matters) the Academic Senate.

These minutes include a roster of attendance for the year 1890 as well as a copy of the Act to establish the University, which has been modified several times in the ensuing years. The current version of the Act can be found on the State Government consolidated law website http://www.thelaw.tas.gov.au. The Act is referred to in the University’s Petition http://eprints.utas.edu.au/15872/ to gain a Royal Charter through Letters Patent http://eprints.utas.edu.au/15939/. Note that while the original Act gives the name “The University of Tasmania”, the current Act uses the name “University of Tasmania”.
