Abstract
The clash between Sir John Franklin, Lieutenant-Governor
of Van Diemen’s Land 1837–1843, and his ranking
bureaucrat, Colonial Secretary John Montagu, has a long
and distinguished historiography. Joel's book is reviewd by Michael Roe,author and historian, and was formerly
Professor of History at the University of Tasmania from 1975 to
1996. He has a particular interest in Tasmanian history. He is
the recipient of The Royal Society of Tasmania Medal for 2009.
