Abstract
Nicholas Tinmouth was Master Attendant of Her Majesty's Dock-Yard at Woolwich, Kent. This volume is an example of empirical method as applied to perennial problems of seamanship; namely, determining the breaking point of chain and hempen cables, determining the lifting capacity of derricks and shear hulks, and determining the strength of cable spans.
