Abstract

When Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution of species by natural selection, in 1859, he already foresaw a great debate, but not its radiance and longevity. At the beginning, the consequences for the sciences, the faith in God and the moral concepts were at the forefront. Soon, considerations of society, politics, international relations and interventions down to the level of the individual and his genetic material, his genes, were added. Social Darwinism, eugenics, and racism were regarded as scientifically legitimate areas of discussion and politics. Fears of a supposed decline can still be scientifically and objectively substantiated in the face of the biologization of thought. At present the controversies are even more diverse, involve far more people than in the late 19th century, have far more serious effects. The authors from eleven countries draw the facets of an exciting and up-to-the-minute debate from various disciplinary perspectives and ask about the future of the "Evolution Evolution".
