Abstract

RB: In 2016, the City of Clarence had the second highest Tasmanian population of people aged 65+ years (20.1%) (ABS 2016). These demographics reveal the need for age-friendly communities (AFCs); inclusive, intergenerational environments that support individuals as they age. AFCs are one of the ten priorities of the World Health Organisation (2017: 15), noting the need for “research, data & low-cost evaluations that enable cities & communities to steer their efforts to what works”. To achieve this, partnerships are necessary. This exhibition & associated project form part of this strategy. RC: This exhibition & associated project empowered City of Clarence citizens to be active community contributors & shapers, whereby the participants shaped the focus & direction of the project & exhibition. To do this, they photographed their experiences of ageing & likes/dislikes of living in the City of Clarence, on which they were also interviewed. The photographs revealed citizenry requirements & desires for an AFC in the City of Clarence. This combination of photography & interviews is a novel interdisciplinary approach that has generated new knowledges on AFCs. 91 of the 889 participant's photographs feature in the exhibition. A selection of photographs also appear in the report for the Clarence City Council (CCC). RS: The exhibition occurred at The Barn at Rosny Farm (run by Clarence Arts & Events) from 16 – 25 October 2019; extended from 20 October 2019. The project & exhibition were funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF), Tasmanian State Government (TSG) & CCC. Grant applications to TCF & TSG were competitive & subject to committee evaluation. The exhibition application to Clarence Arts & Events, which included photographs & words generated by the project participants, was subjected to a competitive & evaluative process from a curatorial committee. The exhibition was listed as a Senior’s Week activity, & I was interviewed on the exhibition by ABC Hobart.
