The purpose of this article is to investigate how (dis)connection with place influences immigrant and refugee women’sexperiences of family violence in regional/remote and metropolitan southern Australia. We draw on research from theASPIRE project (Analysing Safety and Place in RefugeeExperience) in the states of Victoria and Tasmania. A participatory research approach was used to interview immigrant andrefugee women who had experienced violence, and providersof family violence services from eight locations in the twostates. Both inner urban, regional and remote locations wereincluded in the study. The findings present new insight intohow geographic isolation and the scarcity of specialized services affected the experiences of immigrant and refugeewomen in regional/remote areas. Across all settings, participants described experiences of social isolation associatedwith both distance from community networks and beingostracized or seeking to avoid the proximity of perpetratorsand their social networks. Notably, the experiences of womenliving in regional Tasmania and regional Victoria shared moresimilarities than did those of immigrant and refugee womenin regional Victoria and inner-urban Melbourne despite thedifferent legislative environments in the two states.
