Abstract
Social media has become a crucial feature of the Pacificislands in the 21st century, providing people with themeans to demand greater accountability and transparency and offering an alternative platform throughwhich to engage in policy processes, dialogue, anddebate. Increasing social media access and use hasaltered the existing media and communications landscape, with implications for mainstream mediareporting, censorship, and citizen voice. This paperexplores this phenomenon through an examination ofthe digital activism practices of a group of women'srights activists in Fiji. In doing so, this paper exploreshow social media is being used as an online platformfor information dissemination and debate, as well asthe implications this is having “offline” as part ofefforts to influence policymaking.
