Abstract

Identifying factors that inform export activities has receivedattention in the literature, but there are fewer studies examiningthe resources and capabilities required by SMEs operatingin regional areas. Small businesses face a number of challengesincluding resource constraints and lack of access tofinancial capital. For SMEs operating in regional, rural andremote areas, these challenges are amplified. Using the lensof Resource-Based theory, this study aims to identify specificresources and capabilities that enable small premium foodproducers to undertake export into foreign markets. Thisexploratory study utilized semi-structured interviews with(N¼7) SMEs operating in Tasmania, Australia. This researchextends the usefulness of the Uppsala model by offering acoherent understanding of some of the specific requirementsfor exporting activity and illustrates how small firms can harnessexporting resources and capabilities.
