Abstract
Background and objective:There is limited research describing theimplementation or outcomes of interntraining in rural general practice. In 2018,Tasmania piloted its first rural generalpractice intern program. The aim of thisstudy was to explore the experiences ofinterns in the first rotation.Methods:Semi-structured interviews wereconducted with 12 rural generalpractice interns. Results:Six main themes emerged: the socialexperience of rural/remote placements, the intern role, skill acquisition, challenges experienced by interns, placements reinforcing ideas of ruralgeneral practice and advice to futureinterns. Rural interns were positive aboutthe program, reporting intensive learningexperiences from a range of clinicalenvironments. There were somechallenges initially implementing thewave consulting model. The maindifficulty faced by interns was isolationfrom peers/social support.Discussion:Rural general practice intern termssupport rural career pathways. Practicestaff need to be mindful of the integrationof interns into the practice environment, and programs need to provide trainingand support for the role.
