Abstract
Correspondence from James Boyd, Civil Commandant, Port Arthur, complaining of the action of Father Ryan, R.C. Chaplain in distributing copies of the Mercury to the invalid prisoners one copy of 5 Aug. 1858 which contained scurrilous article on the commandant. Boyd was the commandant from 1853 to 1871 and was behind the development of Port Arthur's notorious separate prison, which sent many convicts insane
