Abstract

This chapter looks at several recent proposals for representation of the interests of future generations through reform of national legislatures. It also explores more innovative reform approaches such as deliberative or citizens’ assemblies. It argues for a renewed focus on future generation-oriented reform proposals for legislatures and greater engagement with politicians about these possibilities. Future generations reform proposals need careful scrutiny and care in design to avoid the systemic problems of existing legislative institutions and practice. More research on possible scenarios for different kinds of institutions is also required.
