University life and wellbeing : the association between financial factors and students‚ÄövÑv¥ academic aspirations
thesis
posted on 2023-05-27, 20:09 authored by Johnson, MLUniversity has an increasingly significant role in positively shaping students‚ÄövÑv¥ life outcomes. Established theoretical models and past research indicate that income and financial stressors can impact students‚ÄövÑv¥ academic aspirations, thereby reducing the likelihood of graduating from university. The current study built off the existing literature exploring the relationship between financial factors of income and financial stress on students‚ÄövÑv¥ academic aspirations and expanded upon previous research to consider whether academic self-efficacy accounted for the disparities between students‚ÄövÑv¥ academic aspirations, and if one‚ÄövÑv¥s family social support attenuated low academic aspirations. The study analysed data collected from 64 university students studying at the University of Tasmania. Contrary to the hypotheses, there was no evidence for mediation or moderation. In summary, the current study suggests efforts to address students‚ÄövÑv¥ financial disadvantages and improve the future life chances of students who may be underrepresented in post-secondary education.
