Abstract
Supervising doctoral candidates is among the most important work that university staff can undertake. It is quite rightly regarded as the most significant and intensive teaching and mentoring experience accorded to an academic. The supervision of doctoral candidates thus represents an important and vital nexus where research
and teaching intersect, and is a well-spring from which the new generations of researchers flow and progress to assume key leadership roles within their disciplines throughout Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.
