Abstract

Our work explores politics as cultural practices. The titles of both books –
Interpreting British Governance and Governance Stories – reflect this concern.‘Governance’
conveys the idea that politics consists of historical practices arising out of
the conjunction of state and civil society.‘Interpretation’ and ‘Stories’ convey the
idea that politics, like all human activity, is cultural or meaningful, so the study of
politics is largely a matter of recovering the meanings that inform actions.
