Abstract

Letters from James Backhouse, York, England to Francis Cotton in Tasmania in 1840, 1848 and 1859 and Francis' wife Anna Maria in 1865. The first letter is from Cape Town and the others from York where he doubts the propriety of disowning members who marry non-Friends otherwise suitable (1848), and in the last (1859) he mentions attending Yearly Meeting with his sister Elizabeth and niece Sarah Jane Backhouse, staying with his son-in-law Joseph Crosfield and the transfer of title to the Hobart Meeting House.
