Abstract
This volume is a compilation of recent research papers on the ore deposits of western Tasmania which are relevant to the five-day excursion and workshop. The papers include results of current and recent research by the Ore Deposit Research Team at the University of Tasmania on the massive
sulphide deposits at Que River and Rosebery, and exploration models for VMS and massive pyrrhotite-cassiterite deposits; and contributions by company
geologists on the Hellyer, Mt Lyell and Renison deposits. A summary of recent advances on the geology of the Mount Read Volcanics by Keith Corbett (Mines Department of Tasmania) is also included. Over the past four years our research on the western Tasmanian ore deposits has concentrated on two main areas:
1. Studies on the structure, mineral zonation and gold distribution within the major volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits.
2. Development of improved exploration models for VMS deposits by utilising geological and geochemical criteria such as alteration geochemistry, lead isotopes, stable isotopes and the zinc ratio technique.
As shown in Table 1, much of this research is funded directly by industry. Other projects involve collaboration with the Tasmanian Department of Mines and the CSIRO.
