Abstract

Carte de visite photographs
of a young man standing- with initials and date on the back 17/6/69, a mother and child, two children- one girl child sitting with doll, older boy standing - with the inscription on the back "B & Olly Murray about 1879 or 1890", young woman and girl standing. Bequeathed by John Murray Harrisson, great grandson of John Lee Archer, 1941. Carte de Visite photographs were small albumen prints, 54.0 mm (2.125 in) × 89 mm (3.5 in) mounted on a card sized 64 mm (2.5 in) × 100 mm (4 in). In the 19th century, cartes de visite were a very popular as calling cards. They had a definite format, which was an international standard.
Photographer printed on verso: Johnstone, O'Shannessy and Co./ Photographers to H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh, K.C. and to His Excellency the Governor/ 3 Bourke Street East / Melbourne. Not dated but Johnstone, O'Shannessy and Co operated a photographic studio at 3 Bourke Street from 1870. During the 1870s and 1880s Johnstone was Melbourne's leading portrait photographer. RS.123/16
