Polydore Virgil (d. 1555) was an Italian who spent most of his working life in England where he wrote his most famous work, the Historia Anglica. The present book was published after he had retired to his native Urbino.

At the head of the title page is ‘Bibliotheca Blazeana Anno 1618’, i.e. from the library of Jacobus Blasius (Jacques Blaise), bishop of St Omer 1600-1618. Below, in purple ink, is ‘F. L. Woodward. Sid. S. Coll. Cam. 1890’. Given to the University Library by his executors in September 1952.
